Symptoms and Treatment of Baby Acne

Thursday, June 25, 2009

The birth of a new child, a baby, is one of the most precious gifts that a woman or family can experience. Mothers spend hours doting over their new born child observing every physical and behavioral characteristic. It is not unusual for mothers to notice that at around 4 weeks of age, their baby breaks out in little red pimples. This usually comes as a complete surprise to the mother. This condition is known as Baby Acne.

At times it can be confusing because the pimples can appear strongly at times and then seem to disappear at other times.

Baby acne is a problem of skin and defined as inflamed blackheads, red pimples and whiteheads. Baby acne commonly appears on the arms, legs, shoulders, face and buttocks. Baby Acne can be seen in newborns usually between the ages of 4 weeks of age and six months of age. Not all babies get it but a large number do. Baby acne usually appears on the baby´s cheeks and on other areas of the face. Doctors say that baby acne happens as a direct result of the mother´s hormone levels when she is giving birth. During childbirth and for a short period of time before, the mother´s hormones are allowed to pass through the placenta to the baby.

Baby Acne Symptoms

1. Red bumps predominantly on the cheeks, quite common on the chin and forehead also.

2. Baby acne will be at its peak when the baby's skin is irritated, or when the baby is hot or fussy.

3. If the baby's skin becomes wet from spit-up, saliva or milk, the condition may appear worse for several days.

4. Fleshy or red pimples occur predominately on the cheeks, but are also quite common on the forehead and chin. Whiteheads are sometimes present.

Baby Acne Treatment

1. Drink fresh fruits juices and large amount of water.

2. Never pinch or scrub milia or baby acne.

3. Do not squeeze, dig, touch or pick the acne.

4. Use paper towels to pat the affected area dry and throw it away.

5. Benzoyl Peroxide 5% lotion is very effective to remove acne from the skin.

6. Apply a little medicine such as hydrocortisone cream for baby acne.

7. Zinc is a mineral that helps with the healing of tissue as well as helping with scar prevention. Zinc is also helps the body to resist infection and inflammation. However, high doses of zinc are toxic, so avoid taking more than 100mg per day.

8. An herbal blend that can help with acne consists of equal parts of the herbal extracts of sarsaparilla, yellow dock, burdock, and cleavers. These herbs are believed to be potent blood and lymph cleansers. Half a teaspoon per day of this blend can be taken three times per day combined with a healthy diet.

9. Don't put creams or oils on his skin, either, because these can also make the acne worse. If your baby's acne is severe and likely to scar, his doctor may suggest an over-the-counter treatment like benzyl peroxide or even a prescription medication. But usually patience is the best course of action. Your baby's acne doesn't bother him in the least, so try not to let it bother you, either.

Knowing about Baby Acne

Infants can also have acne. They could have breakouts as early as 2-3 weeks after birth. Baby acne is more common in the in the facial area (cheeks, chin and forehead) and they can even have back acne in this first stage of life.

Baby acne should not be mistaken with milia or eczema. Milia are also known as milk spots. These are small, hard and white-colored spots that usually disappear in about two weeks. Eczema, on the other hand, is a type of skin inflammation and is more serious than acne. Symptoms of eczema include scaling and blisters. Whiteheads are also an issue and these are small bumps, either white or flesh-colored, that are caused by blocked pores. You would know that your child has acne if pimples start to appear within their first month.

Some medical studies show that baby acne could start forming while babies are still in their mother’s womb. In the latter stage of pregnancy, a mother’s hormones are passed through the placenta and are received by the fetus. This can actually stimulate your baby’s oil glands and with the presence of oil, acne can easily appear. This is why some babies would appear to have red pimples even right after birth.

To prevent acne, be sure that you are not using strong detergents in washing your baby’s clothes. Some detergents may contain harsh chemicals that can aggravate the skin. Immediately wipe any food, drinks, or saliva that may drip off from your baby’s mouth as this may worsen baby acne.

Always see to it that your baby’s face is cleaned with water and a mild soap every day. Do not try to scrub their face because baby’s skin is so sensitive and scrubbing would cause reddening. Do not use any oils and lotions that are not recommended by your doctor. These may irritate your baby’s skin easily. You should be alarmed if your baby’s acne problem lasts for more than six months. It is important to get your doctor’s advice if baby acne gets worse.

Is It Baby Acne? Newborn Rash

It's often difficult to diagnose a rash without looking at it.

There are three common rashes that baby can have in the first few months of life. Baby acne is very common and usually starts by about 3 weeks of age. In baby acne, you see red bumps that look like pimples. The bumps are on the cheeks, forehead, and temples. They do not cause any discomfort to the baby, though it often can look very distressing to parents. No treatment is needed for infant acne. It occurs because of the hormonal changes that are occurring in the baby after birth, and will go away on its own in several weeks. You don't need to put any special creams or lotions on it, and you definitely want to avoid any acne products made for teenagers and adults.

Another common rash at this age is seborrhea, also known as seborrheic dermatitis. It usually starts by one month of age. When you begin to notice red bumps (usually smaller than the pimples of acne) and yellow crusty scales and flakes on the hair-bearing areas of the body, such as the eyebrows, eyelashes, and scalp. It also tends to affect the neck and shoulder. Its cause is not entirely clear, though it may be related to eczema. This is what it sounds like your baby has, given the yellow crusts that you describe on the eyebrows. It is not caused by allergy to what she is eating, and the breastfeeding is not contributing to it. While it will go away by itself eventually, it can be treated with certain types of steroid-based creams, if necessary.

Infant eczema is also very common. It usually starts between 1 and 5 months of age. In eczema, you have red bumps and patches in various locations. Eczema often affects both cheeks, on the face only, but it can be much more diffuse, and some babies will have the rash all over as they get older. While it's true that some babies with bad eczema have allergies such as to milk, in the majority of infants a specific cause cannot be found, other than a tendency to have dry skin. Some infants who have eczema outgrow it as they get older, while others continue to have problems with it throughout childhood. Eczema is treated with moisturizing agents, and if it's severe, may also need to be treated with steroid creams or other prescription ointments.

Mention the rash to your baby's doctor at her next visit. If it doesn't seem to be disappearing on its own, or it seems to worsen, I reccomend that you have the rash checked.
